Orato is built around on-device processing. The short version: your audio never leaves your iPhone, and by default neither does anything else. We run no analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs, and the app works with no account at all on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. Two optional features do send transcript text to a coaching service; they are described in full below, and both are your choice.
Plain-English summary. Orato records you while you practise, transcribes the recording on your device using Apple's on-device speech recognition, and — on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence — produces the coaching feedback on your device too. That is the default, and on that path nothing you say or write is uploaded anywhere; you can practise in airplane mode. Your audio recording is never uploaded on any path. If your iPhone can't run Apple Intelligence, or if you are a Pro subscriber who switches on "enhanced AI coaching", the text of your transcript is sent to our coaching service to write your feedback. Both of those paths require you to sign in with Apple, and both are opt-in.
By default nothing is sent to Orato at all. Specifically:
We do not collect your name, contacts, location, photos, advertising identifier, or any other personal information. If you use one of the optional cloud-coaching paths you sign in with Apple, and in that case we receive the stable, opaque user identifier Apple issues for Orato, plus the email address Apple passes along — which is a private relay address if you chose "Hide My Email". We use the identifier only to rate-limit requests; we do not build a profile, and we do not email you.
There are exactly two situations in which the text of a transcript is sent off your iPhone. Neither one ever sends audio.
On both paths the text travels to a Cloudflare Worker we operate, which checks your Apple sign-in, counts the request against a daily limit, and forwards the text to OpenAI, whose model writes the feedback. The Worker does not store your transcript or your coaching results — it keeps only a per-user daily request count so the service can't be abused. OpenAI processes the text under its API terms, which exclude API data from training its models.
You can revoke any of these in your iPhone's Settings → Orato at any time.
On the default path, coaching feedback is generated by Apple Intelligence's on-device Foundation Model. The model runs entirely on your iPhone; on that path your transcript and coaching prompt never leave the device. Apple's documentation describes the on-device model in detail. See "When text leaves your device" above for the two optional paths that work differently.
Orato Pro is sold through the Apple App Store using Apple's StoreKit. When you purchase or restore a subscription, Apple processes the transaction and shares only the receipt-validation data needed to unlock Pro features in the app. We do not see or store your Apple ID, payment method, or billing address. Apple's own privacy policy applies to that transaction.
Orato uses no third-party analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting SDKs. In default use the only external services are Apple's StoreKit (for purchases) and standard iOS system frameworks. If you use one of the optional cloud-coaching paths, two further processors are involved: Cloudflare (which hosts the Worker that relays the request) and OpenAI (which generates the coaching text). Apple is also involved, as the identity provider for Sign in with Apple.
Orato is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
Because all of your practice data lives on your device, you can delete it at any time:
If you are in the EU/UK and want to exercise GDPR rights (access, rectification, erasure, portability, objection), contact support@orato.app. Because we don't hold personal data on a server, most requests are satisfied by deleting the app from your device.
If we change this policy in a material way, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top and, for significant changes, surface a notice in the app at next launch.
